In the recent statistics of the world’s population, there are approximately two billion people are living in the world. With that vast number, resources need to cope up. Therefore, people need to manage the food production more carefully to allow it to sustain more years and to keep up with the unstoppable growth of the rest of the world’s population as well.
Farming methods changed over the past years after the increase in people’s number. It becomes intensified, organized, and convenient. Its primary goal is to maximize the production of goods to ensure proper distribution of food and resources that fit for the growing population. The introduction of pesticides and fertilizers advances in the agricultural process to maximize milk goods and egg production. The chemicals also allow a speed of time for the animals to be ready for meat in the market. It changes the natural process of production to be able to maintain the amount of required food for mass consumption. But is it worth the price? How about the nutritional benefits? Are they less important?
In this article, the focus is more on organic agriculture. Currently, it only accounts for one percent of farming land worldwide. Its primary focus is sustainability that allows less unfavorable effects on the environment and to people’s health as well. Organic farming is a proposed alternative to conventional agriculture. It helps to overcome the climate crisis that food mass production is currently experiencing. However, the debate continues because some expert thinks that it is not the “best” solution for continuous and maximized production.
- Organic farming doesn’t use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or feeds additives from livestock. It requires following more natural alternatives on the process. So instead of chemical fertilizers, manures become an option. It recycles wastes and increases the soil’s structure. Though it is a bit smelly and difficult to apply, its mineral benefits become advantageous in a lot of ways.
- Crop rotation, or the process of naturally changing the kinds of seeds in the soil after harvest, is used to reduce diseases building up within the layers of the land. Organic farming helps strengthens its composition by allowing a natural cycle. Some examples are the beans that collect and increase the nitrates in the soil making it more fertile.
- Instead of using pesticides and herbicides, organic farming prefers weed management. It is safer, a chemical-free, and environmentally friendly technique. The method limits the digging and tilling that somehow affects the fertilization of the soil. Most farmers directly use salt, vinegar, boiling water, or vodka to control and remove weeds. The only drawback would be the intensified labor needed for the process. But all in all, it is advantageous in getting a healthier crop due to the alteration of micro-climate below the plants.
- Organic farming maintains the bio-diversity because there are a limited or no chemicals involved in the process. Biodiversity benefits the food chain throughout each level from the plants up to the bigger animals. With the natural process of agriculture, there are healthier products because of fewer chemicals used on it.
With an ever growing population, the problem somehow doesn’t lie on the types of food people must consume. It’s about the perishability that takes a toll on the mass production of conventional produce. In reality, people waste more food than what they consume. With this instance, organic farming attempts to give a percentage of its crop to some people who would want to sustain the flow of agricultural benefits. As long as people consider the balance between the soil structures and the environment’s biodiversity, the implementation of organic agriculture strategies become helpful.
